Hi, I’m Laura and I’m the daughter of Steve, your new DG. I’m pleased to launch this year’s appeal with a charity that I know really well – Reach Learning Disability. Reach is a Nottinghamshire charity for people with learning disabilities. I’ve been coming to Reach for 10 years. Reach was started in 1999 by parents who were worried about the future for their children with learning disabilities when they grew up. Now the charity has bases in Southwell, Mansfield, Newark and also Flower Pod where we grow flowers to sell. Reach also sometimes do special courses at other places. Keeping healthy is another really important thing. Lots of people with learning disabilities don’t feel happy to exercise or know about healthy foods. They are at a bigger risk than other people of having bad health and getting diabetes.
Last year Reach at Mansfield had a diabetes project. People learnt how to keep healthier, they did things like give up fizzy drinks and did fun exercise. It worked really well! Now Reach want to raise money to do more diabetes courses to help more people. They want all Reach staff, volunteers, families and other organisations to know the best ways to help people with learning disabilities understand about diabetes - wherever they live. Reach clients are currently thinking of a name for the appeal.
My dad has told Reach that fighting diabetes is important to the Lions and I hope that you can support the appeal.
