1. Diabetes Screening Event - January 2019 We held a FREE screening session using Silver Star's mobile screening unit at Southwell Library on 26th January. Qualified medical personnel did a simple blood test which indicated whether or not you should consult your doctor for further tests. Seventy two people were tested on the day for potential diabetes problems and given lifestyle advice based on their BMI results and questionnaire. Of those tested 32 were found to be at medium risk, 29 at high risk and 3 at very high risk of developing diabetes. A chart of the anonymised data is below.
2. Southwell Lions Schools Challenge Competition This is a new competition which we started in the Autumn of 2018. It has two aims:
To support and encourage young children to take part in creative arts
To raise children’s awareness of Lions Clubs; who we are and what we do
The competition comprises 3 challenges; a different challenge during each of the 3 school terms, starting from September 2018.
1st Term challenge is to create a picture.
2nd term challenge is to write a short story of no more than 500 words.
Sleaford & District Lioness Club After an evening of preparation, The Sleaford Lionesses had a very successful stall at the bustling Sleaford Christmas Market. After a miserable start to the day weatherwise, the sun shone and people came out to look at all the stalls. A tombola of jumble jars, containing all sorts of lovely things especially for the children raised nearly £200 for local charities. A stall has already been booked for next year. See photo below.
The Lionesses have knitted small stockings for their Christmas tree as part of the Methodist Church Tree Festival. ‘Suspended Stockings’ was the name of the tree amongst the 80 trees in the church and the hall. See photo Socially the Lionesses enjoyed a lovely Christmas meal , good to relax and chat after a busy year and also to share secret Santa presents. See photo below.
Four Community Service activities in this festive season , the lionesses spent the day at a local school helping the children decorate the cakes that they provided. The school soldl them at their fayre in the evening and raised £122. They have provided the tea for the Rainbow Flyers Youth Club Christmas Party and went round the streets with Santa sleigh. They have also helped Santa at Crazee Bongos. They were invited to Laffletics Christmas party and joined in the fun see photo. Photos of Santa Sleigh, Food and children at Rainbow Flyers party and the cakes made with the children. We could not take pics of the children. With Christmas cards being distributed the Lioness collection of stamps filled two large boxes. A big thank you to the U3A stamp collectors for their contribution. The stamps will be going to Against Breast Cancer. Well the Lionesses will meet in January to plan for the New Year, A Marie Curie Coffee morning is planned for 2nd March – a new venture, The 30th Charter Anniversary will be celebrated with a Sunday Lunch on June 2nd and the Charity Golf Day on June 7th. Other activities both community Service and Social will be added so that being a Sleaford Lioness is great FUN.
